Overview

Interactive commenting system layered over content areas

I analyzed the user needs behind the content and the platform interface structure, and proposed a new commenting interface and interactive modes for interacting in the content interface area, as well as realistic use cases for each user group.

Background

Changes in content mediums

Everyone can be a consumer and a creator now. Content consumption has become a holistic activity with changes in mediums.

Target setting

'Hidden creator': Comments are also creative

Content consumption has gone from passive viewing to active interaction with content with the advent of 'commenting'. A generation with a creator's ego sees commenting as a creative endeavor - they want to be funny, they want to be famous, etc.

I positioned and targeted Hidden Creators, people who are creative but not active enough to create content, and who create funny comments while watching already created content.

User positioning

Discovering opportunity areas with unique user positioning

Less proactive than creators, but equally creative and with a strong need for expression.

User journey

Comments are a huge creative force, but only in the consumption interfece area

Hidden Creators experience a disconnect between content consumption and comment creation as they move back and forth between the content area and the comment area to view or write comments while watching content.

UI structure study

Completely separate interface where commenters can't be Creators

The video content platform is separated into the content area for creators and the comment area for consumers due to the different nature of the different areas. Therefore, Hidden Creators, who have both content consumption and comment creation needs, need to go back and forth between different interfaces repeatedly.

Short-form content interface

Segmenting the depth of the interface between comments and content to separate consumer and creator areas.

Long-form content interface

Separating the interface hierarchy of comments and content vertically.

Needs expression

User needs to engage more with the content

Simultaneous watching

Consume edited content without being hidden in the commenting interface

Best commetor

Requesting creators to pin my comment and suggesting content

Hyper specific empathy

Writing highly detailed timeline comments

Platform's reaction

Current updates that still want to address disconnected areas

Comment reply

Content that displays both the replied comment and the video on the same area

Popup best comment

Pop-up of the best comment in the middle of the video

Empathy count popup

Pop-up of empathy count on the scene with the highest empathy

UI structure reverse palnning

Interfaces separated by different characteristics

Difference in upload times

Content posts and comments being uploaded at different time points

Difference in Spatial variability

The static space of the uploaded content versus the dynamic space of ongoing updates

Interface needs

However, hidden creators want to navigate between those differences

Capturing specific times

Capturing the time progression within the content area and bringing it into the comment area for consumers

Capturing specific areas

Capturing the content scene by scene, cropping specific areas, and sharing them with other consumers

Navigating through times & spaces

Combining comments and content from different spaces and at different times into a single piece of content

Platform's reaction

Interactive commenting system on content interface for consumption-based creation

UI structure study

Designing the 'COMMENT on CONTENT' button

I designed a toggle for consumers who do not want this system in the top fixed component area, while buttons for creation are placed in the content-specific component area on the right side, along with the comment section.

User flow

Designing user flows and features for different user groups

Interactive mode

Interactive mode for more creative freedom

Writing- at the time and on the scene you want
At the desired time, place the comment at the desired location.

Drawing- in the shape you want
After writing a comment and drawing a line that fits the content, the text line adjusts accordingly.

Motion tracking- to the movement you want
Press on a moving object to track motion and map the comments to it

Use case

Hidden creator- Enjoying and utilizing content to the fullest

Engage with content at the same time
You can interact with content at the exact location and time of the content, bringing you closer together.

Becoming the protagonist with attention-grabbing comments
You can also make your comments the star of the show by spicing up your content with eye-catching comments.

Ask for the details
You can ask questions by commenting on the appropriate part of the video, so you can ask specific questions that are relevant to the scene.

Pop up a detailed comment - Linking to other content
If you want to see a comment in more detail, reply to it, or like it, you can tap on the floating comment to pop it up. If someone left a link to another video in the comment, you can jump right in, and we've designed the video to jump to the other linked videos so you can consume the recreations of a particular scene seamlessly.

Use case

Creator - New content opportunity area

Content that provides areas for consumer engagement
You can create content within the video itself that allows viewers to answer questions and feel like they are the creator being asked.

Content that gives viewers topics and space to interact freely
There will be content that only consumers will create. This campfire video, which provides a sledding theme, is meaningless as content, but it provides a space for viewers to gather, so they can sled or have conversations within the content as if they were sitting around a campfire.

Re-create content using comments as a template
Create a cycle of creators and consumers by enabling the creation of new content with comment templates.

Application

Applicable to various content platforms

COMMENT on CONTENT is a comment system that can be applied to any content platform, whether it's video content or any other content with comments. Through this system, I hope that content platforms will evolve into playgrounds for hidden creators, rather than just spaces for passive viewing.

Feedback
I think it will be distracting to the content.

I think the most important thing is to have funny comments at the right time.

They are hard to see on light background, and they go by too quickly to read.
